Modem Requirements

Before you choose to BYO modem, check the list below.

  • Type of Modem: It can be a USB modem, wireless data card or inbuilt modem.
  • Frequency: Ideally both 900MHz and 2100MHz, to take advantage of the Optus Dual Band network, although most metro areas are covered by 2100MHz.
  • Network Unlocked: If you're locked to another network, you'll need to contact your previous service provider to unlock it.
  • SIM card slot: So you can plug in our Virgin Mobile Broadband SIM card.

The Fine Print: Not for sale in Northern Territory or Tasmania. Data includes uploads and downloads & is charged per KB. 1) Broadband speeds are available in the Optus Dual Band (2100MHz / 900MHz) network. BYO customers will need a dual band (2100MHz / 900MHz) modem to access full coverage areas. See virginmobile.com.au/broadbandcoverage for more info & coverage. Outside of these areas you will fall back to Optus’ GSM/GPRS network. Acceptable Use Policy applies. Peer to peer speed limited to 32 Kbps. Service cancellation may apply if you download continuously or if your use adversely impacts other users. 2) Ability to change plans only available for new connections after 6 April 2009, within this range of plans. You can change plans once per billing month. 3) Exceed your data allowance & speed is limited to 128 Kbps for the next 250 MB. Use more and your service will be unavailable until the first day of your next usage period, unless you buy a data top up (max 3 per month).
