BYO Modem Checklist

Before you choose to BYO modem, check the list below. Looking for Apple 3G iPad or Tablet PC plans?

  • Type of Modem: It can be a USB modem, WiFi modem, wireless data card or inbuilt modem in a laptop.
  • Frequency: Ideally both 900MHz and 2100MHz, to take advantage of the Optus 3G Dual Band network, although most metro areas are covered by 2100MHz. If you have a 4G Capable device, it will need to be compatible with the 1800MHz frequency.
  • Network Unlocked: If you're locked to another network, you'll need to contact your previous service provider to unlock it.
  • SIM card slot: So you can plug in our Virgin Mobile Broadband SIM card.

Modem Setup

OK. So you're ready to roll? You'll just need to update your modem connection settings, so it knows to use our network.

That's it. Bear in mind if you do decide to BYO modem that we will refer you back to the equipment manufacturer for technical support.

The Fine Print: Not for sale in Northern Territory. International roaming not available with mobile broadband. 1) Data includes uploads and downloads. Exceed your data allowance & speed is limited to 128Kbps for the next 250MB. Use more and your service will be unavailable until the first day of your next usage period, unless you purchase a data top up (max 3 per month). Service cancellation may apply if you download continuously or if your use adversely impacts other users. Acceptable Use Policy applies. Peer to peer speed is limited to 32Kbps. 2) With a Postpaid Mobile plan on the same account. 3) Broadband speeds are available in the 3G Dual Band areas of the Optus Open network. A 3G dual band (2100MHz/900MHz) modem is required to access the full coverage area. See virginmobile.com.au/broadband-coverage-checker. Postpaid Mobile Broadband: 4) Leave anytime just pay current month's pro-rated spend and any outstanding amounts. 5) Ability to change plans only available within this range of plans. BYO plans can change up or down once per billing month. Note: Credit approved customers only. 1st bill is pro-rated (min monthly spend and included data) from the date you connect to the start of your next month’s bill. Payment by E-Bill & Direct Debit only.

Prepaid Mobile Broadband: 6) Proof of ID required. Data includes uploads and downloads & is charged per KB. Acceptable Use Policy applies. Peer to peer speed limited to 32 Kbps. 7) Included data has a 30 day expiry.

*4G broadband coverage is currently unavailable in Canberra areas. Modem will automatically revert to 3G network. 4G network is expected to be rolled out in 2013. 4G WiFi Device will only access 4G 1800MHz network, outside of these areas, it will automatically fall back to 3G network. The 4G 1800MHz network is not available in Canberra. Check your coverage.
