The low down
The combination of using your mobile phone and driving is not a safe option, plus it's just not clever!
In 2002 the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association released a set of safety tips for motorists using hands-free mobile phones while driving. In Australia it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless you use a hands free in-car-kit or portable hands free device.
Penalties differ from State to State, however the following gives you an indication of what's at stake:
NSW: Three demerit points and a fine of $231
QLD: Three demerit points and a fine of $225
In short, you are NOT cool if you do the following;
- Answer your phone while driving
- Make a call while driving
- Attempt to send or receive an SMS while driving
This behaviour is dangerous to yourself and others on the road.
You can be cool and keep connected by;
- Pulling your car over to a safe place and turning your car off
- Getting a hands free device for your handset
- Let Virgin Mobile voicemail take your call - remember it's free to retrieve your voice messages in Oz!
- Wait until you reach your final destination to look at your SMS/check your voice mail/make or receive that call - it'll be worth waiting for!
