So you'll be happy to hear that we use the Optus network, which reliably reaches up to 97% of the population in Australia. That's 19 out of every 20 people in Oz! You may not get reception in the middle of the Simpson Desert, but you will in most places that you do go.

Building a stronger signal

What's more the network is continually being upgraded to give you the best possible experience. The 4G network has recently been launched in selected areas of Sydney, Newcastle, Toowoomba, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, & Adelaide which will provide you with improved speeds when compared to 3G. Network Information: Network coverage depends on your phone. 3G services are available to up to 97% of the population with compatible 3G dual band phones and up to 80% of the population with compatible 3G single band phones.Those lucky folk with compatible 4G devices connected to any Virgin Mobile postpaid plan will be able to use the Optus 4G network where it’s available. Outside those areas you’ll fall back to the Optus 3G dual band network. A number of factors may affect coverage including location, demand on the network and the use of an external antenna.

1. Optus 4G service is part of the Optus Open Network™ and refers to our UMTS800MHz/1800MHz/2600MHz coverage. Coverage available throughout the Open Network in 4G coverage areas subject to network availability. You will require an Optus 4G compatible device to access the 4G coverage, throughout the Optus Open Network™. A number of factors may affect coverage including location, demand on the network and use of external antenna. When within a 4G coverage area, your call or data session may also access the 3G or GSM/GPRS networks if your handset supports 3G dual/2100Mhz/900Mhz, single band/2100Mhz or 3GGSM/GPRS 900MHz.

2. Optus 3G dual band service is part of the Optus Open Network™ and refers to our UMTS2100MHz/900MHz coverage. Coverage available throughout the Open Network in 3G dual band areas subject to network availability. You will require an Optus 3G dual band compatible device to access the 3G dual band coverage, throughout the Optus Open Network™. A number of factors may affect coverage including location, demand on the network and use of external antenna. When within a 3G dual band coverage area, your call or data session may also access the GSM/GPRS network if your handset supports GSM/GPRS 900MHz.

3. Optus 3G single band service is part of the Optus Open NetworkTM and refers to our UMTS2100MHz coverage. You will require an Optus 3G single band compatible device to access the 3G single band coverage. A number of factors may affect coverage including location and demand on the network. Outside the 3G single band area you will require a device capable of accessing GSM 900MHz. When within a 3G single band coverage area, your call or data session may also access the GSM/GPRS network if your handset supports GSM/GPRS 900 MHz.

4. 2G services only available within GSM/GPRS areas of the Optus Open NetworkTM. You will require a GSM/GPRS 900 compatible device to access the 2G service.

5. Optus prepares Optus Open Network™ (mobile) coverage maps using the latest available data, tools and techniques to map Optus mobile coverage as accurately as possible. However as with any network based on radio technology, handset quality or local conditions may prevent or interfere with mobile reception within coverage areas. Eg. Inside concrete buildings, lift wells, basements, tunnels and road cuttings. High rise buildings may also suffer degradation of service and these maps are not an indication of in-building coverage. Our coverage maps may show planned rollout. These predictions are based on rollout schedules available at the time of publication and they may be subject to change without notice should circumstances require.
