Top Tips for choosing an iPhone plan

Thinking about getting an iPhone? Already have one and want a better plan? To make sure you get the best plan for your needs, keep these tips in mind.

1. Included data

Smartphones are all about apps & mobile browsing, and that means data! Think about how often you’ll be online, checking Facebook, emails, news etc. Remember that apps, videos, Google Maps & features like Siri can use a lot of data as they often keep running in the background, even if you’re not using your phone.
Check your data usage regularly to avoid excess data charges, especially in the first few months.

2. Data flexibility

Adding a data plan to your standard iPhone plan is a good idea, especially if you can change the plan up or down later if your usage changes. Take a look here for a basic guide to choosing the right data plan.

3. Coverage

Will you have 3G coverage where you need it? It’s not enough anymore to just be able to call or text. Check coverage maps on company websites and speak to friends & family who live or work in your area.

4. Customer satisfaction

How happy are you with your phone company? It’s easier than ever to find out how satisfied phone customers are – ask your friends & family, and check out research agencies like Roy Morgan, who run regular surveys of customer satisfaction.

5. Contract terms

What if you want to leave? If your circumstances change – you move, or take a job that includes a phone with another provider, how much will it cost you to leave? These costs vary significantly between providers.

6. Insurance

iPhones are expensive items that travel with you all day, every day. Is insurance an option? Or can you get it covered in your home/contents insurance? Don’t forget to consider how much any excess is, and what’s included. You’ll usually have to ask for insurance at the same time as your new phone.

7. Cost & inclusions

Now we’re getting into the nitty gritty. Consider things such as:

  • How much data is included?
  • What’s the total monthly cost?
  • How much credit is included & what can you use it on? What happens if you don’t use all your monthly credit? Can you roll it over to the next month?
  • Consider the cost of calls per minute, SMS, MMS, as well as things like flag fall and whether you pay for voicemail.
  • Are there any extras included, for example free calls on the same network?
  • If you’re bringing your own phone, do you get a discount or bonus? Do you still have to sign a contract?
